Opinion: Look comfortable, trendy this winter

Fiona Burnham, Staff Writer

Winter is here in all of its glory, and as the temperature lowers, many people are at a loss as to how they can pull off a cute outfit while still staying warm and comfortable. You can either recreate these outfits or simply draw inspiration from them in order to make your own personal look out of these winter trends.

Fashion this year has seemed like a blast from the past, so much so that your mom might be feeling a sense of déjà vu she glances into your closet. Late summer and autumn featured the return of past staples such as corduroy, checker print and boyfriend jeans and this winter is no different.

Sweaters are a timeless staple in any winter wardrobe.

The first cozy winter outfit idea welcomes back chenille, the soft cloud like material that will help you forget all about the miserable chilly weather. Chenille sweaters had their first big moment in the 90’s with the help of supermodels Kate Moss and Cindy Crawford, but 2017 brought them back and better than ever.

Pair an oversized chenille sweater such as this one from Garage Clothing US with some black leggings and combat ankle booties for an effortless and cozy outfit great for school or just lounging around the house in style.

Behold, the ultimate trick to fashion in the cold months: layering.

During the winter months, layering your clothes not only keeps you warm, but also adds personality and style to your outfit.

When the temperature goes down, just pile the layers up.

Flannel has been in style for an extensive period of time-and it doesn’t seem like it will go out anytime soon. Though flannel is timeless, there’s nothing fresh about a staple that has been rocked for decades. Ditch the tired button up for a warm flannel scarf that will add a pop of color and an extra layer of coziness to any outfit.

You can either find this scarf at Target for $14.99, or customize your own by cutting a strip out of an old flannel and using tweezers to fray the ends.

Dresses don’t have to be reserved for summer time.

Dresses are usually categorized as a summer necessity, only to be packed away as soon as the first cold front arrives. However, it’s easy and trendy to rock them in the winter months as well! Trade out the sandals for some combat boots and add an extra layer of warmth with some patterned tights or leggings.

This bright floral dress from Target is perfect for adding a splash of color into the drab winter days. With your choice of outerwear, this outfit can easily be styled up or down.

Retro trends such as chunky cable-knit and loose boyfriend jeans are making a reappearance this season.

Boyfriend jeans are yet another of the many trends from the 90s that have made a reappearance this year. Loose fitting boyfriend jeans add a casual and carefree element to any outfit, and look great paired with a chunky cable knit sweater such as this festive red one from Forever 21.
