The Interact club, at Mayfield High School, is a way to give back to the community. I was able to find time to interview Mr,Turk the Interact club advisor and R.J. Prosen, a junior at MHS and the Interact club president. For people who haven’t heard of Interact club or know much about it, a quick overview is that Interact club is a large group of students who meet up once every two weeks on a Thursday to all help plan activities and events on weekends where kids can help with community events or help on the Pay it Forward Room to ultimately give back to the community here at Mayfield and beyond. During my meeting with Mr.Turk he shared his passion for how his club gives back to the community and creating a positive change. He gave me insight to one of their most recent events where the students in Interact club organized the Pay if forward room to hold a large food drive event for the community Mr,Turk gave some facts about the event saying, “we had a dad come in his morning and take a cart full of food to bring to his family in need” and “got more texts from families asking if they can borrow essentials from pay if forward room to use in there everyday life.” Interact club has had many powerful impacts on the community and really impacted many people’s lives. When I met with R.J. Prosen, Interact Club president I wanted to get insight from him about his main focus for the future of the Club and he said, “I want to keep doing things outside of the school to collaborate with other clubs and expand our purpose, and also for more people to know that we have the pay it forward room here at Mayfield so they can know if they need help we are more than welcome to help out.
Interact Club recently held two more events. Last week one of the events they held was a very successful Book Drive event where the club held a fundraiser and were given and donated many books which led to all members of the club traveling to Willson Elementary School to deliver the 15,000 books they raised to give to all the students but also to read to them as well. Mr.Turk wanted his students after the event to take away and see that “there is a real need out there and the world isn’t as simple as we make it see here at Mayfield and there are students that really struggle and they will see some kids in tough situations but they still have much joy to share as well.” R.J Prosen when I asked him about the event he said,”We got thousands of books, so many, to be able to get younger students to be able to have access to reading is just a great thing to see.” Interact club has done an amazing job by impacting students in need and spreading love and kindness throughout the community and beyond. Some upcoming event for Interact club include: Preschool game night and club members will run games for the kids to make it a really fun night, the 13th the club members will help organize the Pay It Forward room to help give back to families in need, the 16th a Spring craft fair event, and then a spring clean up for senior citizens over spring break. Through all these events Mr.Turk had a few goals for the Club to succeed in doing, he wanted to “Make sure the community is okay and to support the needs of them, but the big goal is to develop leadership and service, and awareness in the students in our school” The work being done by Interact club has such a powerful and long lasting impacts on our community and beyond to highlight how powerful one act of kindness can be and truly reach another.
