As the end of the school year gets closer, many seniors are starting to think about what comes next, whether that means going to college, starting a job, or figuring out another path. This new chapter in life can feel exciting, but also a little scary. With big decisions ahead, a lot of students are asking themselves, “What will I do after high school?” To learn more about how seniors are feeling, to figure out their mindset as this approaches I spoke with Frankie Coreno, a graduating senior, and her younger sister, Gigi Coreno (freshman), to get a grasp on how they feel as someone on the inside and outside. We talked about Frankie’s plans for the future, how she feels about leaving Mayfield High School, and what this moment means for both of them as they prepare to take on new challenges.
When I spoke with Frankie Coreno, I asked her eight questions to better understand how she feels as she gets ready to graduate and start a new chapter in her life. I learned that Frankie has been part of Mayfield Schools for her entire life, starting in kindergarten and now finishing her senior year. Over the years, she has been very involved in school activities, including playing volleyball all four years and joining clubs like the Italian Club, Cats Cabinet, and Voices Magazine. These activities helped her feel connected to the school and allowed her to make many memories and friendships. After graduation, Frankie plans to attend college and study nutrition, something she is passionate about. One staff member who had a big impact on her was Mr. Bokovitz. She said that he wasn’t just a teacher who stood at the front of the class, he truly cared about building real connections with his students and made an effort to support them. Frankie also had advice for younger students, reminding them that not every day will be perfect, but if you keep going, things will get better. Her favorite memory from Mayfield is visiting Ms. Morgan’s class every morning and having fun before starting the day. One of her proudest moments was winning a district championship in volleyball during her senior year. Looking back on her time in school, Frankie said that every teacher, classmate, and friend she met had some kind of impact on her, whether big or small and without them, she wouldn’t be the person she is today.
I spoke to Gigi Coreno to see what she had to say about Frankie graduating. Gigi stated that she had mixed feelings, a sense of pride that Frankie was going off and doing great things, but that she was going to miss her. One memory that stood out for Gigi with Frankie was the year that they were in the same school and played a season of volleyball together. She believes Frankie will have a lasting impact on Mayfield High School because of her constant positivity and cheerful smile. Gigi has seen Frankie grow into a compassionate and independent person throughout the years, a person who always greets others with a smile and a friendly attitude. Frankie’s absence will definitely be felt, but her legacy will remain.
As Frankie gets ready to leave Mayfield High School, she looks back with gratitude for all the memories, lessons, and people who helped shape her. From fun mornings in Ms. Morgan’s class to winning a district championship, her time at Mayfield was filled with meaningful moments. While saying goodbye is never easy, Frankie is excited for the future and ready to take on new challenges in college, and Gigi, looking forward to this new chapter in her big sister’s life. While I, as well as many others, can’t wait to see what she’s going to do next.
