The Mayfield Art Show is an annual event in May that displays student artwork from Mayfield City Schools.
Each year has a different theme, and this year’s theme is Visual Voices.
One can expect to see many different pieces of artwork at the art show. Diana Beebe, art teacher said, “The show’s intent is to show the art curriculum, grades K-12”.
Gail McClelland, Co-Chair of the show and art teacher, also believes that there will be a good representation of the art curriculum. She said, “[The artwork] is pretty well balanced… [there are] 200 pieces from the High School, and 250 pieces from the Elementary and Middle Schools.”
All of the art teachers work every year to put the show together. McClelland said, “I help organize the show and put it all together along with Miss Stevenson. We call the hospital, work with teachers, and order supplies.”
Beebe said of the show, “I am one of the teachers that contributed to it this year, and I help whenever possible. [I also] show that art is important and I, along with Mrs.Germano, used to be co-chairs.”
In addition to ordering supplies and contributing artwork, the art teachers also set up the show. Beebe said, “We set up on the Friday before the show, the entire day, putting up the boards, and making sure the artwork is balanced.” McClelland added that is takes about seven hours in total to set up the show.
Everyone has a different aspect of the show that they like. McClelland said, “My favorite part is getting to see the entire show come together. I get to see the art from the elementary and middle schools and how it all comes together.”
Beebe said her favorite part is “when all the kids, especially the little kids and their families get excited, and to see how kids [artwork] transforms from kindergarten to twelfth grade. I also have friends at Hillcrest and get texts about how nice the show is.”
Junior Tyler Parks is a dedicated art student who has his work in the Art Show. Parks said his favorite part is “seeing the different art styles of the kids.”
Justin Perkins is another junior who has an interest in art. He said, “I like how the different colors of the art work make it stand out.”
Credit must of course be given to the students who work all year in order to have their work chosen for the Art Show. Although everyone in art classes work to submit to the Art Show, only the best artwork makes it in.
Parks said, “I am glad [to be in the show] because the piece that was submitted I worked hard on and it is my favorite piece that I made in class.”
The Art Show also represents how much the community cares about the art program. McClelland said of the Art Show, “It is free and is supported in part by Mayfield City Schools, Hillcrest Hospital and the Mayfield Business Alliance.”
