WQ: Ambition pushes students to excel
December 11, 2015
Mayfield High School students show strong ambition to succeed in their future goals in many different ways.
Alan Shvartsman is a sophomore at Mayfield and has a dream of being a lawyer when he grows up.
By taking specific courses at school, he is more prepared for a future in law. “I want to be a lawyer that works in big business. Econ helps with money management, knowledge of business, and an overall knowledge of how the economy operates,” Shvartsman said.
Shvartsman took communications to build up his speaking skills so he can achieve his dream. “I took communications over the summer. It taught me how to present in front of an audience,” he said.
Choosing to take these classes will hopefully make him stronger and more knowledgeable in his field.
Additionally, junior Lakshi Mittal has a broad but significant goal for the rest of her high school career. She strives to learn something meaningful that she can eventually use in her career.
“I really want to learn how to work with people that are different than me,” Mittal said.
Mittal became a Wildcat Focus mentor to help build new relationships. She said, “The kids and the mentors in my room think differently than me and have different aspirations, so I’m learning how to understand their views.”
Wildcat Focus has given her an opportunity to be exposed to a variety of students. “You learn to be tolerant of everyone and willing to change your perspective. I think this skill makes you a more amicable person,” she said.
Mittal’s ambition to be more open-minded will continue to have importance in her life, whether it is in her senior year or her future workplace.
The senior class has a vast amount of ambitious students preparing for college and their careers. Annie Okun is just one among many.
Okun’s dream is to become a teacher. “I want to be around minds that will look to me for support. I want to be a teacher because I know that I can’t change the world, but I can spark the mind of someone who can,” she said.
Becoming an educator has been her main focus for years. Okun has been noticeably dedicated to her dream through hard work and determination.
Okun believes she’s gone above and beyond to achieve her goal of being an educator. “I volunteer at elementary schools, I maintain good grades, and I’m a part of Wildcat Focus. I do anything I can because it’s super challenging to get your foot in the door at a good school district,” she said.
Okun has been accepted into Kent State University for the Middle School Education program. Although she hasn’t decided which school she will be attending, her major at all will be related to education.
