Diversity isn’t tough for companies like Pinterest to figure out, as it’s been a big reason for its success.

Male or female, white or black, Asian or Hispanic.

Certain genders, races, and ethnicities have always dominated society and I think it’s time that diversity becomes everyone’s middle name. Whether it be in the workplace, at school, or at restaurants, no one should be seen as a minority but as an equal. By accomplishing, this people and society as a whole will be better off.

Technology has been the major leap that minorities needed for receiving equality, and it’s especially seen in Silicon Valley and Pinterest. 49% of engineering interns in 2016 at Pinterest were women and that’s huge, since last year it was only 32%.

Pinterest also increased the hiring rate for people from different ethnic backgrounds in non-engineering roles to 12% from 7%

Finally companies like Pinterest are starting to realize that they need minorities because they know it will better their company. Ben Silbermann, co-founder of Pinterest, told USA Today, “Diverse teams come with a broader set of experiences, which means they often have new perspectives and ideas.”

Thankfully, one business owner realizes the benefits of having a diverse staff, but now others need to make this realization as well.

Just imagine having the exact same type of employees, won’t you get bored? I know I would, so why do companies do it? Employers have an enormous list of people to choose from and yet they never change the kind of person they hire.

It’s not a bad thing that when you look around your office and see 10 different ethnicities. People might actually like it if they were given a chance to experience a diverse work staff. Candice Morgan, diversity chief at Pinterest, said to USA Today, “I’ve had many people remark to me how amazing it is to see that diversity in the faces around the office and in the building.”

Additionally, there’s a reason why white men make up most of the workforce and it comes down to people’s views on who should dominate society. We can change the norm of who to hire, all it takes is businesses like Pinterest to show the benefits of the minorities.

Van Jones, who has fought for more diversity in the tech industry, told USA Today, “Some of the most effective ways to make progress are to do just what Pinterest is doing: set measurable, public goals and hold yourself accountable to those goals.”

Society has made progress with regards to accepting minorities but there is still something holding them back. When people start to fully understanding that we all should be equal then that’s when we know the world has succeed in accepting minorities.
