NIGHT OUT? THEATRE RELEASE DATES

Unbroken – Dec 25th
Just about everyone is looking forward to Angelina Jolie’s new historical film, which follows the story of Louis Zamperini’s 47 days at sea and imprisonment in a Japanese war camp. With an all-star crew of screenwriters (including the writer of Gladiator and the Coen brothers) along with an avoidance of major household names in the cast, it isn’t one to miss.

Into the Woods – Dec 25th
Going from a movie with relatively unknown actors, this musical adaptation is so star-studded, it may as well be classified as a new constellation. Whether or not the film will deliver in terms of making fans of the stage show happy, I don’t know. But I definitely am not opposed to seeing Meryl Streep as a creepy looking witch.

The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies – Dec 17th
Fantasy fans can be taken back into the cinematic paradise of Middle Earth, for the third installment of the childrens’ book that probably could have been condensed into one really long movie. But that’s alright. We’re still fond of the action, magic, and drawn-out adventure of this epic.

ALSO TO WATCH

The Interview – Dec 25th
Franco, Rogan, and highly offensive material? Yeah. What else is new?

Editor’s Note: Due to safety concerns about possible threats associated with this film, Sony Pictures has delayed its holiday release.

The Gambler – Dec 25th

You had me at Mark Wahlberg.

STAYING IN? DVD RELEASE DATES

Guardians of the Galaxy – Dec 9th
Sure, December 9th already happened, and sure, unless you live under a rock, you’ve probably already seen this summer blockbuster. Regardless, it’s a great re-watch. And, on the off chance you haven’t seen it in both 2D and 3D in theaters, climb out from under that rock and discover the wonder that is Chris Pratt.

The Maze Runner – Dec 16th
YA adaptation fans: you’ve probably been waiting to have your DVD viewing party, so here is your chance. Say what you want about the “book-to-movie inaccuracies” but I thought the casting was pretty spot-on. And Dylan O’Brien fan or not, those are some pretty sweet effects on that maze.

This is Where I Leave You – Dec 16th
Jason Bateman. Tina Fey. Adam Driver. Rose Byrne. Can’t you just taste the verbal spars? Sure, the film itself is a bit overwritten, but it really is saved by a cast that can make a less-than-stellar drama something substantially comical and relatively enjoyable.

The Skeleton Twins – Dec 16th
If there ever was a duo to love, it’s Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader in this delightfully dark drama. Although I have enjoyed them both on SNL, I wasn’t expecting to enjoy this off-beat quirky film with such an indie feel it’s quite weird to see recognizable names on the movie poster. Definitely a good choice for low-key movie days.
