New KKK series could be worth watching

Adviser’s note: On Dec. 23, the USA Today reported the name of the series has changed to “Escaping the KKK.” Then on Dec. 24, A&E reportedly decided to drop the show from airing.

A&E is making a documented series on the KKK, which I think will show people a better view of the members of the Klan.

The series, entitled “Generation KKK,” will follow four Klan families who each have a family member that is trying to escape the horrible Klan. Rob Sharenow, general manager of A&E and Lifetime, said, “This series gives viewers an unprecedented look at what it is like to be born into hate.”

I agree with what Sharenow said because everyone knows about the Klan’s beliefs, but no one knows what it is like for them when they have a child in their family who doesn’t want to have any part in what the Klan believes.

Maria Puente, a writer for USA Today, said, “The series will also follow a network of anti-hate and peace activists working to convince members to leave the Klan, including former members of hate groups who had a change of heart.”

In the 1920s the Ku Klux Klan was at it’s all time peak, exceeding over four million members nationwide. To this day there are only about 5,000 to 8,000 members. Even though the numbers dropped tremendously, there are still a lot of members, which is why trying to convince members to leave the Klan is truly amazing.

I also agree with them to make these documentaries because it goes deeper into how the members interact with each other, and what they do on an everyday basis.

Mark Potok, senior fellow at the Southern Poverty Law Center, said, “”On the one hand, it is wise to humanize these people; they’re not aliens from outer space, they’re human beings who have gone wildly off the tracks.” Even though these people have horrible views on society and how it should be ran, they are still people. No one out of the Klan knows any of them personally so this gives us all a chance to see who some of them really are.

The documentaries are released on Jan. 10, 2017, so I’m not sure how it will go, but I am very happy that us people get to dig deeper and see what it’s like to be born in a family of hate, and not wanting to be apart of it anymore.
