Every year the PRIDE Club sets up an annual cultural dinner. The dinner celebrates a chosen culture, and this year it’s Germany.

The whole goal of this event is to bring the communities together and learn a little bit about a country they know little about. Michael Reinhard is one of the club advisers who is in charge of setting up the PRIDE dinner and cooking certain foods for the event.  He said, “The PRIDE dinner’s [purpose] is to expose our community and everyone within the Mayfield City School District, to show them to different culture and different food through the PRIDE dinner and entertainment.”

Each member works together to have every little thing about the dinner go just as planned.  Showing up to every meeting, staying on task, and working outside of school, plays a big role in how successful the dinner is going to be.  Reinhard said, “Collaboration is the biggest thing! You know that’s why we emphasize in coming to the meeting on time and being here. We’re big on collaboration and everybody bringing different ideas to the table.”

For the dinner on March 16 to be a big success each member relies on each other to get a certain amount of work done. Sophomore Ishita Mathur is a club member who focuses her work on the posters and finding recipes for the dinner.  She said, “A lot of members get assigned work and that’s a big responsibility as a PRIDE Club member. I will make sure we all get organized and stay on task.”

Everyone works on their teamwork and spend extra time during late start Wednesday and after school to help build their group and come up with great ideas that can further push the dinner into to success.

This year the club is lacking the appropriate amount of members to make this event a success. Mathur said, “This year we don’t have a lot of people in the PRIDE Club so it’s like we are like five or six people and we have to organize that whole event by ourselves.”

Each member gets assigned double the work due to failing attendance of students but that doesn’t discourage any of the members. Mathur said. “Yeah it may be annoying that no one shows but this kind of makes me want to work like a little harder. You know?”

The safe environment and judge free zone is able to create safe dialogue and engage more students in pitching new ideas.  Every opinion, every idea is open to discussion within the club. Mathur said, “We don’t really judge anyone when someone comes up with a new idea. We want a really safe environment for everyone since we are with each other for the whole year.”

The whole point of PRIDE is to instill school pride into high school, to teach people the importance of acceptance and learning new cultures. Every member expresses their excitement hoping that every dinner guest appreciates and learns something new about Germany like they did. Mathur said, “It’s really fun to set up. I actually learned a lot about Germany and hope the people do too since we worked really hard on research.”
