Colleges are doing a horrible job at preparing students for their future white-collar jobs.

According to Douglas Belkin of CNN.com, students are graduating without the necessary critical thinking and analytical skills needed in life.

College is expensive, so why aren’t students getting a quality education?

Part of the problem lies within the professors.

“We need professors, but perhaps different kind of professors—not so lofty though still theoretical and idea driven and research based—but more practical ones to educate students for what’s going on now,” wrote Larry Alvarado of the Evolllution.

Colleges need to start using top professors that teach more about life skills, like establishing good communication, listening skills, and decision making skills.

Not only that, but professors should at least engage their students and make them want to learn, so they can have a better chance of acquiring knowledge. Lectures can be boring and dull, and by spicing up the atmosphere, students will have an easier time retaining information if what they’re learning sounds appealing.

“Many teachers feel more comfortable teaching to their students making jokes so that they would get students attention, but not leaving the topic they are talking because this is the purpose of each teacher,” said Malcolm of the English Forums.

Sure, there’s an improvement of learning from freshmen year to senior year, but it’s not enough. Students still lack the essentials needed to carry out the demands required by jobs.

Students should be aware of what to expect in the workplace.

To make sure this is possible, colleges should also start testing students yearly to make sure they are improving their understanding.

A yearly test will help not only the student, but also the professor. It will let them know where their student needs to improve and where they don’t.

Society and business needs are always changing, yet there’s no change in the way students are taught. There must be a better preparation for students so they can work efficiently.
