Ohio attorney general Mike DeWine has been spreading misinformation to further his party’s agenda to ban abortions in Ohio.

DeWine shamelessly twists the facts, and even downright lies, about the disposal process: he told the Columbus dispatch that “Cooking and disposing of fetuses is not humane. It will come as a shock to Ohioans that fetal remains are being mixed in with yesterday’s garbage.”

When he says that fetal remains were “steam cooked,” it is a gross misinterpretation of a process that all medical waste must undergo in order to be safely disposed of: sterilization, which of course involves high heat.

So how are the remains actually disposed of? According to Cleveland.com, “Planned Parenthood handles fetal tissues just like other health care providers handle all sorts of medical material. It is either treated for sterilization or incinerated, and then disposed of.”

Time.com confirms this as well, saying “Planned Parenthood has contracts with vendors to handle fetal tissue in a respectful manner and in accordance with the law.”

The Columbus Dispatch is in agreement as well, saying “State investigators found that Planned Parenthood affiliates in Columbus and Cincinnati contracted with Accu-Medical Waste Co. […]Accu-Medical Waste confirmed to investigators that fetal remains and other biological waste are placed in auto-clave devices, which use high temperature and pressure to kill germs and infectious matter. The material is then taken to an unspecified landfill in Kentucky.”

According to the Columbus Dispatch, “DeWine’s findings differ from his counterparts in many other states. Eight found no wrongdoing by Planned Parenthood.” this is more evidence that DeWine is doing this purely out of political interest, rather than any legal or moral obligation.

The investigation itself was sparked by the release of videos that had been deceptively edited, further showing what tactics of deception and misinformation opponents of abortion rights are willing to use to create an uproar.

DeWine has grossly twisted the facts for political purposes, utilizing pathos to prey on the fears of the ignorant who do not care to find out the truth, a tactic developed by Donald Trump that is sadly being adopted by more and more members of the GOP.
