Over the past year, Mayfield High School has grown through renovation and modernization. Despite the introduction of various charging stations or the 1:1 chromebook initiative, perhaps no change will be more socially impactful than the new Spirit Store.

The new Spirit Store, located near the library in the showcase hallway, features various Mayfield-branded goods that aim to promote the school throughout the community. The new structure replaces the old bookstore that was based out of a room next to the cafeteria.

“Think about where the [old] bookstore was,” Principal Jeff Legan said. “I thought it was horrible. No one knew where it was. It was behind cinder blocks and decaying wood. When you look at where the spirit store now is, it’s in the heart of the school. As soon as you walk in the doors, you turn to your right and it’s right there.”

Initially, the store was a vision by Legan in order to promote school spirit. Due to recent events, it has symbolized so much more.

“Unfortunately, with the passing of Sunny [Patel] last October, I just thought about putting the two together. You talk about something that symbolizes who Sunny was and it’s all about spirit. Making people feel good.”

According to administration, they are open to suggestions for future products. Currently, the store features the sale of numerous items for sale, such as jackets, sweatshirts, t-shirts, mugs, hats, and more, each affixed with a design reflecting the Mayfield identity.

“I’m a fan of the new Spirit Store,” senior Kyle Kinkopf said. “It allows us students to show support for Mayfield.”
