On Monday, Dec. 13, Mayfield’s Limited Edition Show Choir (LTD) sang and danced to five songs at the Winter Choir Concert.

The songs were selected in order to fit this year’s theme which was “Love Conquers All.” In order, LTD sang and danced to “Harder to Breathe” by Maroon 5, “You Give Love a Bad Name” by Bon Jovi, “Good 4 U” by Olivia Rodrigo, “Apologize” by OneRepublic, and “Want U Back” by NSYNC.

Director Brian Fancher helps select which songs LTD is going to perform along with Larry Braun who helps choreograph their routines. Fancher said, “We come up with a concept and then we develop the music and choose the songs based on that concept.”

Although Fancher was extremely proud of the concert as a whole, he was particularly impressed with “Carol of the Bells” this year. It’s a tradition for the concert choir, chorale, and show choir to all sing this song together at the end of the concert. Fancher said, “Each group is about 20-30 students and then combined, we’re talking about 70-80 singers, and so that’s a lot of fun to just have that many voices all joining together and the sound they put out is really exciting.”

Junior Paris Bunch has been a member of LTD since her freshman year and her favorite song to perform was “Harder to Breathe.” She said, “The choreography for this song is my favorite along with the song in general. It’s just an upbeat, energetic, and really cool song to listen to and to have fun with.”

According to Bunch, the show went smoothly but she felt a little bit of pressure due to unforeseen circumstances. She said, “Last night, I got a solo that was given to me the day before, so I practiced that as best as I could and I think I did very well. I also had to understudy for another solo, but I don’t think it went as bad as I thought it would.”

Megan Kless is also a junior who’s been a member since her freshman year, and she found the costume change in between concerts the most difficult. “The students in Chorale have to change in between the two [performances]… Running to the back dressing room and putting on our shoes, our pants, and the shirts – it was chaotic and there were so many girls in the dressing room at one time.”

Even though there were a few hiccups throughout the concert, Bunch was very proud of the alto section’s performance. She said, “I was very impressed with how we all did as far as making sure we knew all our parts, and that we were confident and not waiting for someone else to sing.”

After not being able to host concerts for nearly two years due to the pandemic, Fancher was excited that the choir had a live audience to listen to them sing. He said, “Someone just told me recently that the late Steven Sondheim, who passed away a few weeks ago, had a quote: ‘The audience is the final collaborator.’ I’ve grown to really like that thought because it’s one thing to rehearse and perform a piece of music but without an audience, there’s something missing.”

The show choir’s next performance will be on Tuesday, March 8, although Mayfield High School will also be hosting a show choir festival on Saturday, Jan. 22 in which LTD will compete against five other high school show choirs.
