‘When the Bough Breaks’ leads the envied on

Samone Banks, Guest Writer

Envy. Jealousy. Lust.

These all must be included in a psychological thriller.

“When the Bough Breaks” is an immediate attention-grabbing film and should be seen by those who find deep interest in such soul-seeking movies. The setting takes place in the Taylor’s home and lake house the majority of the movie.

Regina Hall and Morris Chestnut takes the role as Laura and John Taylor, a desperate couple wanting a child but are both very successful, young, and professional in their careers.

Jaz Sinclair plays the envious role of a young, manipulative, and beautiful woman as Anna Walsh, who takes the role as their surrogate mother then plays mind games as she lusts for John’s love and attention he gives to his wife.

As Anna, Sinclair plays this role really well as she and her abusive boyfriend tries to scam the couple out of their money and trust. As being the surrogate, she had the ability to use her conniving ways to get what she wanted and manipulate them into her mind games that makes her look innocent.

Sinclair didn’t let her boyfriend’s conniving ways get in the way of her love for Chestnut and make them hate her for finding out why she was really there and what the real plan was. She played victim in the movie whenever she didn’t get her way or even around her boyfriend to make them think he was the problem and not her.

Hall and Chestnut were the best couple to play the parts they played. Hall was able to know and understand the mind games Sinclair tried to play with them, still maintain her marriage and managed to have their cake and eat it too. Chestnut was able to make Sinclair believe he was in love with her, play the same mind games she played, and was still making sure the baby was safe. Hall knew what it had to take to save her baby and her marriage.

The screenplay and plot of the movie were very detailed and interesting. The great acting of the scenes made you want to know more and get straight to the next scene.

The plot tries to make the audience think the ending is when Chestnut takes Sinclair to their lake house and that’ll be their new life.

“When the Bough Breaks”could be like a better version of the movie Obsessed. Similar to Obsessed, the movie has both obsession and jealousy but it has a more deriving concept which shows how people can really envy one’s love towards another and shows the daily aspects of how obsession can lead someone’s mental state into the wrong path of thinking.

The difference is that “When the Bough Breaks” focuses on how Sinclair wants to live their lifestyle and manipulate them for money and taking their child as her own, while Obsessed focuses on a jealous women basically attempting to end her life over an obsession of a married man just because of her extremely sexual attraction towards him.

Senior Malik Bacon said, “I really found this movie very interesting which made me want to know if there was any complications when they got the baby home and did they trust anybody else after that.”

I gave this movie 9 out of 10 golden stars because I really found a lot of interest in this movie. This movie had to be the best movie I’ve seen so far in 2016.
